The Great Depression was the worst economic downturn in the history of the industrialized world. In the United States, the beginning of the economic crisis was marked by the stock market crash of October 1929 and continued through the nation’s transition to a wartime economy in the build-up to America’s participation in the Second World War. In the initial years of the depression, consumer spending and investment dropped, causing steep declines in industrial output and employment as failing companies laid-off workers. By 1933, when the Great Depression reached its lowest point, the American economy had shrunk by one-third, industrial production had decreased nearly 50%, farm income had declined by 56% (over a million farmers had lost their homes), 40% of the country’s banks had failed (nine million savings accounts had been wiped out), real wages fell 60%, and 13 million Americans (25.2% of the workforce) were unemployed.

  1. Using specific examples, identify the weaknesses in the American economy before the Great Crash of 1929.  In your response, please explain whether or not the pro-business policies of Presidents Harding and Coolidge contributed to the worsening of economic conditions by 1929. 
  2. What specific policies did President Herbert Hoover adopt to reverse the economic downturn?  In your opinion, why were those policies insufficient in resolving the task at hand?

Alice Walker is credited with bringing the work of Zora Neale Hurston back into the public eye after years of obscurity. Walker is a poet, essayist, and fiction writer whose most well-known work is the novel The Color Purple, which won the Pulitzer Prize. In the story “Everyday Use” Walker considers the subject of cultural heritage from multiple perspectives by focusing on material objects which hold symbolic value.

In a literary work, a symbol generally stands for something beyond itself. The symbol may be an object; it may be a place; it may be a character; it may be an action. Exactly what the symbol stands for is often open to interpretation by the reader.

In “Everyday Use” it is clear that a family’s old quilts have symbolic meaning. What is not so clear is what they symbolize (in this story overall) and what meaning(s) they hold for individual characters.

In a paragraph of about 200 words:

  • Analyze the symbolic meanings of the quilts in this story.
  • Support your analysis with at least two brief direct quotations (include page # in parenthesis).
  • Be sure to identify who is speaking:
  • Is the speaker the narrator (and who is the narrator)?
  • Is the speaker a character (use proper names)?

  1. Lindell and Perry state "the relevant effects are changes in receivers’ beliefs and behaviors" regarding warnings.  They go on to describe and give examples of receiver characteristics.  Name the characteristics and the examples they provide.

  4. Lindell and Perry spend a considerable amount of time discussing perceptions.  Name the three locations of perceptions which they describe. Explain in 1-2 sentences how each category might impact the receiver taking protective action.
  5. Review the section titled "Protective Action Decision Making" carefully.  In your own words, outline the process and steps they present. 
  6. Identify examples of both situational impediments and facilitators to protective action.  What might an emergency manager do to alleviate impediments and increase facilitators for the communities they serve? How might situational factors be related to a receiver’s environmental and social context?
