Phases of the Moon Lab Equipment needed: This handout and your mind. Do not forget to answer the questions on the last page. In this exercise, you will investigate the cause of the phases of the Moon. The figure below shows an orbital diagram of the Earth-Moon system as viewed from above the Earth’s North Pole. Light from the Sun is coming from the left. Note that the drawing is not to scale. Also the time during the day is in military time. Section I In Fig. 1 shade in the part of the Moon that is in shadow in each of the eight numbered positions. The first has been completed as an example. Use dark shading for the shadow. An example is given for position 1. Fig. 1 (4 points) Section II In Fig. 2 hatch in the part of the Moon that that is unobservable from Earth. Use light cross-hatch for the unobservable side. Forget what you got for Fig. 1. The best way to do this is to draw a stick figure of you on Earth towards the respective position. See Fig.2 for an example of how to do it for position 1. (4 points) Section III Combine the results from Section 1 and 2. Use the stick figure to determine the part of the moon you see. (8 points) Section IV Record the phase and appearance of the Moon in Table 1 for each of the eight positions in the diagram. (Again, the first has been done as an example.) (4 points) An eclipse can occur when the Sun, Earth, and Moon line up (a lunar eclipse is when the Moon passes into the Earth’s shadow, a solar eclipse is when the Moon’s shadow falls on the Earth). At what phase can a lunar eclipse occur? (2 points) At what phase can a solar eclipse occur? (2 points)
